Types of Title Deeds in North Cyprus
Understanding the distinction between title deed classifications is paramount for foreign buyers.
The 3 Main Title Deed Categories
1. Pre-1974 Freehold (Koçan Tapu)
Original title deeds issued prior to 1974. These deeds carry undisputed international recognition and zero political risk.
2. Exchange Title (Eşdeğer Tapu)
Issued to Turkish Cypriots who swapped property in South Cyprus post-1974. Fully backed and guaranteed by the TRNC government, forming the majority of real estate developments today.
3. Allocation Title (Tahsis Tapu)
Deeds awarded post-1974 for military or government services. Buyers are advised to seek legal counsel before purchasing properties under Tahsis deeds.
